What Is AEO — and Why Does It Matter for Your Site?
INTRODUCTION

SEO got your site into Google. AEO gets it into AI.

Search is changing fast. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question about your industry, those systems don't just rank pages — they synthesize answers from sites they trust. If your site isn't structured for AI discovery, you're invisible to a growing share of your potential buyers.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI systems can find, understand, and cite it in their responses. Kennext is one of the first SEO platforms to measure AEO readiness as a distinct score category.

What AI systems are looking for

AI answer engines evaluate your site differently than traditional search crawlers. They prioritize:

Schema markup — Structured data (JSON-LD) that explicitly tells AI systems what your content is about, who you are, and what you do. FAQ schema, Organization schema, and Product schema are especially valuable.

Clear, answer-formatted copy — Pages that directly answer specific questions perform better in AI results. If your copy is vague or marketing-heavy without being informative, AI systems will pass it over in favor of more direct competitors.

llms.txt — A plain-text file at the root of your site that tells large language models which pages to prioritize and which to skip. Similar to robots.txt for traditional crawlers. Kennext checks for this and generates one for you if it's missing.

AI crawler access — Systems like GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot must be allowed in your robots.txt. Many sites accidentally block them. Kennext flags this immediately.

Authority signals — Backlinks, citations, and brand mentions across the web signal to AI systems that your content is trustworthy and worth surfacing.

What your AEO score tells you

Your Kennext AEO Readiness score reflects how well your site meets these criteria. Common issues Kennext flags include:

Missing or incomplete schema markup on key pages. No llms.txt file. AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt. Pages without FAQ-formatted content on high-intent topics. Product and service pages that describe what you do without clearly answering buyer questions.

How to improve your AEO score

Every AEO issue in your Kennext dashboard includes an AI-generated code fix. For schema issues, Kennext writes the complete JSON-LD block you need to add to your page's <head>. For llms.txt, Kennext generates the full file based on your site structure. For robots.txt issues, it shows you exactly which lines to add or remove.

Start with any P0 or P1 AEO issues — these are the ones most likely to be actively blocking AI discovery of your site.

Why this matters for B2B companies

Gartner predicts that 25% of organic search traffic will shift to AI chatbots by 2026. For B2B companies, where buyers research extensively before purchasing, being present in AI-generated answers is increasingly the difference between being in the consideration set or not. Your competitors are optimizing for Google. The ones who move first on AEO will have a significant head start on AI-driven discovery.
